Emu oil is commonly found in hair products, including our shampoos and conditioners, because it is believed to promote hair health and growth. Many people also use pure emu oil in their hair and scalp in addition to, or instead of emu oil shampoos. When used as a hair treatment, emu oil can add luminosity and volume to hair and support its natural growth cycle.
Why Use Emu Oil for Hair?
Many people who use this traditional Australian hair treatment find that they enjoy longer, thicker, shinier and bouncier hair. It is thought that emu oil works to nourish hair while it’s in its active growth cycle, and that it may support hair health through the changes wrought by hormonal fluctuations, genetics and age.
Emu oil easily penetrates all layers of the skin and scalp, including hair follicles. Hair follicles go through natural stages of rest and activity; emu oil can stimulate follicles during their active phase to help them be more productive. It can keep the skin of the scalp healthy and support more rapid hair growth.
How Is Emu Oil Used for Hair?
You can apply emu oil to your hair and scalp to keep your hair, scalp and follicles healthy and robust. The amount and frequency of emu oil to be applied to the hair will vary depending on the natural oiliness, length and thickness of your hair and your preferences.
If you have thick hair, you may need to add a larger quantity of emu oil, since thick hair will absorb more of the liquid. Long hair may also require more oil, since there’s just more of it. Dry hair, too, will benefit from the hydration support of emu oil, but will need slightly more of it.
You can apply this oil anywhere from a few times a day to once every few days, depending on your hair’s oiliness, thickness and length. Experiment with amounts and frequencies to learn your own preferences.
